Master Phillip Blackman

Phillip Blackman was born, raised, and schooled in Los Angeles. Upon his graduation from high school, his passion for baseball took him south to the University of San Diego. While attending school and playing college baseball, Mr. Blackman became interested in Martial Arts through a local fitness center and took up kickboxing. Mr. Blackman's training came to a halt when his instructor was injured doing a demo for the television show, "That's Incredible!" Mr. Blackman moved back to L.A. to attend U.C.L.A. While studying at U.C.L.A., Mr. Blackman was still seeking to continue his Martial Arts training. In his search for a school, he came across Jun Chong TaeKwonDo Studios. Under Grandmaster Jun Chong, Mr. Blackman trained with Master Instructors Phillip and Simon Rhee, Daniel Dvorsky, Greg Williams and Peter Malota. Upon finishing U.C.L.A., Mr. Blackman pursued a career as a wholesale food broker in the meat packing industry.

Even though his 12 hour days started at 4:00 a.m., Mr. Blackman continued to train in both TaeKwonDo and Hapkido. He met his wife, Kristine, and married her in L.A. in 1989.

Mrs. Blackman's family was living in Albuquerque and she and Mr. Blackman visited New Mexico regularly. After having enough of what L.A. had to offer, the Blackmans relocated to Albuquerque in 1993 to pursue his dream. With the support of his home  school in L.A., the Jun Chong TaeKwonDo Centers, Mr. Blackman opened the Blackman TaeKwonDo Academy in July 1993. Mr. Blackman retains close ties with Grandmaster Jun Chong and the other Master Instructors in L.A. In 1997, Mr. Blackman was honored with the "Instructor of the Year" award from The World United Martial Arts Organization.

Mr. Blackman's true passion is TaeKwonDo in all aspects. In 1987 he realized that his specialty was teaching and has found great fulfillment in these experiences. He likes to make a difference in people's lives through his knowledge, understanding, and communication. He has been rewarded by the personal success of the children and adults whom he has influenced. He would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our Dojang!
