Master Phillip Blackman
Master Instructor, Owner
Phillip Blackman was born, raised, and schooled in Los Angeles. Upon his graduation from high school, his passion for baseball took him south to the University of San Diego. While attending school and playing college baseball, Master Blackman became interested in Martial Arts through a local fitness center and took up kickboxing. Master Blackman's training came to a halt when his instructor was injured doing a demo for the television show, "That's Incredible!" Master Blackman moved back to L.A. to attend U.C.L.A. While studying at U.C.L.A., Master Blackman was still seeking to continue his Martial Arts training. In his search for a school, he came across Jun Chong TaeKwonDo Studios. Under Grandmaster Jun Chong, Master Blackman trained with Master Instructors Phillip and Simon Rhee, Daniel Dvorsky, Greg Williams and Peter Malota. Upon finishing U.C.L.A., Master Blackman pursued a career as a wholesale food broker in the meat packing industry.
Even though his 12 hour days started at 4:00 a.m., Master Blackman continued to train in both TaeKwonDo and Hapkido. He met his wife, Kristine, and married her in L.A. in 1989.
Mrs. Blackman's family was living in Albuquerque and she and Master Blackman visited New Mexico regularly. Master Blackman's dream was to own a Martial Arts school and after persuading Mrs. Blackman to leave Los Angeles, the Blackmans relocated to Albuquerque in 1993 to pursue his dream. With the support of his home school in L.A., the Jun Chong TaeKwonDo Centers, Master Blackman opened the Blackman TaeKwonDo Academy in July 1993. Master Blackman retains close ties with Grandmaster Jun Chong and the other Master Instructors in L.A. In 1997, Mr. Blackman was honored with the "Instructor of the Year" award from The World United Martial Arts Organization.
Master Blackman's true passion is TaeKwonDo in all aspects. In 1987 he realized that his specialty was teaching and has found great fulfillment in these experiences. He likes to make a difference in people's lives through his knowledge, understanding, and communication. He has been rewarded by the personal success of the children and adults whom he has influenced. He would like to take this opportunity to welcome you to our Dojang!
Master Kristine Blackman
Director of Operations, Owner, Instructor
Mrs. Master Kristine is a 4th Dan Black Belt in Taekwondo& Hapkido. "I love training in Taekwondo and helping build BTA since 1993. When I"m not training or teaching I can be found either doing office work, on the slopes skiing, or on a beach! I started training in 1990 at Jun Chong Taekwondo in Los Angeles under Grand Master Jun Chong. When my husband, Master Phillip Blackman, decided he wanted to open up his own Taekwondo school in Albuquerque, I became his right-hand girl! I had a few injuries over the years and being very busy building our business - it took me 7 years to attain the rank of 1st Dan Black Belt in 1997. I currently hold the rank of 4th Dan Black Belt in both Taekwondo & Hapkido - having achieved that in 2014. Master Blackman and I invite you to come be a part of this family owned and oriented dojang. We look forward to seeing you on the mat!"
